The Chapters That Shaped My Perspective

Every chapter of my career has reinforced a single principle: the most consequential decisions rarely involve only legal considerations. They require an understanding of governance, operations, business strategy, institutional priorities, and the people those decisions affect.

Chapter One

The Foundation: Legal Advocacy & Nonprofit Leadership

COMMUNITY INTERVENTION AND EDUCATION SERVICES

My legal career began in public service, advocating for survivors of domestic violence and families navigating complex legal challenges. This experience reinforced that effective legal advocacy begins with understanding people, earning trust, and solving problems that extend beyond the courtroom.

Chapter Two

Building My Legal Foundation: Health Law & Compliance

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina

Working within one of the nation's leading healthcare organizations, I supported legal research, corporate governance initiatives, and regulatory compliance. This reinforced that legal counsel is most valuable when it supports informed business decisions—not simply legal compliance.

Chapter Three

Bridging Law & Business: Workforce Strategy & Employment

Duke University & Duke University Health System

Partnering with executive and operational leaders strengthened my ability to balance legal risk with organizational objectives and people-centered leadership. The strongest advisors provide the strategic perspective leaders need to make informed decisions.

Chapter Four

Executive Counsel: Institutional Strategy & Governance

North Carolina Central University

Today, I serve as trusted counsel to executive leadership, advising on the legal and strategic issues that shape institutional decision-making. This role represents the culmination of my professional journey—bringing together advocacy, legal foundation, and business perspective.

Perspective Shapes Strategy

Learning that advocacy begins with understanding people.

Chapter 01

The Foundation

My legal career began in public service, advocating for survivors of domestic violence and families navigating complex legal challenges. Serving as a court advocate, I represented victims in judicial proceedings, managed more than one hundred client matters, coordinated community resources, secured grant funding, and facilitated court-ordered educational programs. This experience reinforced that effective legal advocacy begins with understanding people, earning trust, and solving problems that extend beyond the courtroom.

CHAPTER REFLECTION

This chapter taught me that effective advocacy begins with understanding people. Trust, empathy, and practical problem-solving remain the foundation of every legal strategy I develop.

Expanding Perspective

CHAPTER 02

Where legal analysis became business strategy.

My transition into corporate legal practice expanded my understanding of how legal decisions influence organizational success. Working within one of the nation's leading healthcare organizations, I supported legal research, corporate governance initiatives, employment law, regulatory compliance, and healthcare policy. Analyzing emerging legislation, interpreting complex legal issues, and translating legal concepts into practical business guidance reinforced an important lesson: legal counsel is most valuable when it supports informed business decisions—not simply legal compliance.

CHAPTER REFLECTION

This chapter reinforced that legal counsel creates the greatest value when it translates complex law into practical business decisions that strengthen organizations and reduce risk.

Chapter 03

Bridging Law & Business

Balancing legal risk with organizational success.

My experience at Duke transformed the way I approach legal counsel. Partnering with executive and operational leaders across one of the nation's leading academic health systems, I advised on complex employment matters, workplace investigations, compliance, labor relations, organizational strategy, and executive decision-making. Working at the intersection of law, human resources, and business operations strengthened my ability to balance legal risk with organizational objectives, financial realities, and people-centered leadership. It reinforced my belief that the strongest advisors do more than identify legal risk—they provide the strategic perspective leaders need to make informed decisions.

CHAPTER REFLECTION

This chapter deepened my understanding that the strongest legal advisors do more than identify risk—they provide the strategic perspective leaders need to navigate complex organizational challenges with confidence.

Executive Counsel

Chapter 04

Helping institutions navigate complexity with confidence.

Today, I serve as trusted institutional counsel at one of North Carolina’s public universities, advising executive leadership and campus stakeholders on the legal and strategic matters that shape University operations and decision-making. My practice extends beyond traditional legal advice, integrating legal analysis, business judgment, governance, and enterprise-risk considerations to advance the University’s mission and long-term objectives.

I partner with executive and senior leadership, deans, department heads, administrators, and other campus stakeholders to navigate complex matters involving employment and labor law, faculty and student affairs, governance, athletics, Title IX, litigation, contracts, procurement, regulatory compliance, public records, and institutional policy. From managing sensitive investigations and coordinating consequential disputes to negotiating complex agreements and developing institutional policies and processes, I help decision-makers identify risk, evaluate practical considerations, and implement solutions that are legally sound, strategically aligned, and operationally sustainable.

This role brings together the defining elements of my professional journey: the advocacy that shaped my early career, the legal and organizational foundation developed through employment and higher-education practice, and the business perspective refined through strategic advising. It has reinforced my belief that the most effective legal counsel does more than interpret the law—it provides the clarity and perspective organizations need to navigate complexity, strengthen their operations, and move forward with confidence.

CHAPTER REFLECTION

This chapter represents the culmination of my professional journey—bringing together advocacy, legal analysis, executive advising, and business strategy to help leaders make decisions that are legally sound, strategically aligned, and built to endure.

EVERY CHAPTER SHAPES PERSPECTIVE

One principle has remained constant throughout every chapter of my career:

The most effective legal counsel extends beyond interpreting the law—it provides the perspective leaders need to make confident decisions.
